SECOND COMING
1973 – 1978
Kevin's very first band formed at school in 1973, evolving from a classroom Beatles project into a acclaimed cabaret & disco circuit act across the UK.
The School Project Beginnings
As part of an English project at school in 1973, Kevin Birch, Paul Gains, and Simon Evans got together to record a cover version of The Beatles' "Help."
Further rehearsals followed, and Gary (Kevin's cousin) joined later on Bass Guitar. The group named themselves "Second Coming" — taken from an Alice Cooper album track (with no religious connection, despite travelling around in a Ford Transit Van with the name in bold letters on both sides!).
Initial Full Line-Up:
- Kevin Birch: Lead Vocals & Guitar
- Paul Gains: Lead Guitar & Vocals
- Gary Watts: Bass Guitar & Vocals
- Simon Evans: Drums & Vocals

Local Following & Keyboards Expansion (1975)
A strong start was made by the group, who built up a loyal regional following while receiving praise in local club journals.
In 1975, Anthony Freeman joined the group on keyboards (pictured 2nd from left above), before leaving the band shortly afterwards.
Cabaret Circuit & EMI Battle of the Bands
From 1975 to 1978, "Second Coming" enjoyed great success nationwide, particularly across cabaret and disco clubs. They were signed and managed by the Bill Smith Agency in Sheffield.
Their repertoire ranged in style from The Beach Boys to Beethoven's 5th Symphony and Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody."

1978 Departure & Evolution to Magic Mind
The group came to an end as "Second Coming" when drummer Simon Evans left in 1978.
A new drummer was recruited in 1978 and the band changed musical direction toward "New Wave". A new name was chosen — "Magic Mind" (taken from an Earth Wind & Fire track). Electronic keyboards and saxophone would also feature more prominently.
